This is a delightful example of the paintings of noted Midwestern artist Richard Lorenz. The painting has an image on each side of the board: on the face, Lorenz depicts two horses. They stand on yellow hay, but the figures are otherwise built from grays and browns, almost in grisaille. The subject is typical of the Realist paintings for which he is most celebrated, though the small size of the painting and the suggestion of an interior makes the image intimate and quiet. The reverse of the painting shows an Impressionist view of a field, with haystacks scattered around a tall tree.
