Art is How We Live Our Lives: Black Artists in Wisconsin

"I think we tend to think that it's just paintings and sculptures but art is everything [...] Art is how we live our lives" said Della Wells, speaking about her work creating visual folktales through art. There is a long tradition of Black artists living and creating in Wisconsin. In this exhibition, we provide a shared space for the work of artists such as William J. "Prophet" Blackmon, Simon Sparrow, Reginald K. Gee, Della Wells, and John Biggers. Whether the medium consists of common household materials such as grocery bags and house paint, or traditional mediums like lithography, these artists sing, proclaim, and innovate through art; embodying Wells' words.
