'Flower' is an original fruit serpentine sculpture signed by the Zimbabwean artist Benjamin Mundara. The title 'Flower' in this case is more suggestive than definitive, as the sculpture is fully immersed in an abstract visual language of biomorphic forms: curving lines, rounded volumes and sloping planes abound as the viewer takes in the deep and rich colors and patterns of the serpentine stone. The overall composition recalls some of the abstract works of American modernist Georgia O'Keefe, who likewise used natural forms and close cropping to create new abstract imagery. Here, however, these motifs are fully immersed in the Shona stone carving traditions of Zimbabwe.
