This painting is a small and intimate example of the paintings of Daniel Kelwer, coming from his series 'Linear Tactility.' The paintings in this series all share a consistent, linearly divided composition with investigations into the visual and psychological resonance of color relationships and texture. Color relationships, texture, and a brushless paint application dominate the paintings’ surface, while also questioning the figure-ground relationship: The sculptural paint feels as if it is reaching off the canvas towards the viewer like the spines of a cactus. At the same time, the vibrant colors draw you into the paintings’ surface. This example in particular, 'Grey on Green,' makes this cactus-like quality almost literal, using a blue-green background upon which the grey and white spines of paint seem to grow.
