"Vendiendo Frutas," ("Selling Fruit") is a signed oil on canvas by the Peruvian artist Ernesto Gutierrez. Born in Lima, Peru, in 1941, Gutierrez is a leading Peruvian artist. His father was a Spaniard and his mother was descended from the Incas. After high school, the artist attended the School of Fine Arts in Lima, earning a Bachelor's of Fine Arts degree in 1964. He was awarded a gold medal. Sponsored by the Brazilian government, Gutierrez received the Itamarti Scholarship, studying for two years (1966-67) at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro. He has exhibited throughout South America: Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Cordova, Santiago de Chile, and Lima. In 1971, he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and studied at the University of Wisconsin where he earned a Master's in Fine Art in 1974. He currently resides in Wisconsin. Gutierrez's influences are diverse: pre-Columbian art, native and popular Peruvian art, and modern French masters such as Cezanne, Gauguin, and Matisse. He is a brilliant colorist and simplifies forms and volumes in his work. While he clearly displays modernist influences like Cubism, Gutierrez draws on traditional Peruvian subjects, such as women at a fruit market. piece size: 37 1/4" x 69" frame size: 49 1/2" x 81 1/4"
