Child's Play

In our staff-curated Gallery 1SW, an exploration of artists and artworks that embrace the inner child. If you have ever found yourself in an art gallery or a museum thinking, "A child could do that," you're not alone! For some artists, though, this is exactly what makes their practice unique. Starting with the Surrealists in the early 20th Century, artists started to observe and experiment with the techniques of artmaking used by children. Uninhibited ideas and pleasure in making often followed, as did artwork from some of the most celebrated Modernist masters. Some contemporary artists also embrace this playful method, with results as varied and inspiring as the art of any young child artist. Curated by Rachel Kreiter.
