Lyrical Visions: The Work of Marc Chagall
The David Barnett Gallery presents over thirty original lithographs and posters by the artist known for his synthesis of influences, including Cubism and Fauvism, Russian folk art, and Jewish tradition. Chagall achieved a personalized, expressive aesthetic through symbols and fantasy. Art historian James Sweeney has written that Chagall’s contribution to art is the “reawakening of a poetry of representation, avoiding factual illustration on the one hand, and non-figurative abstractions on the other.” The exhibition will explore the artist’s moving works of reverie, visionary joy, and despair particularly through his illustrations of the Bible.
