In this painting, Robert Richter presents the viewer with a deep and vibrant field of red grass. Indeed, the term 'field' here is apt, as the large expanse of red in the painting seems to borrow from the color field paintings of the Abstract Expressionists. Mark Rothko, for example, composed his spiritual paintings of fields of pure color, looking to how those colors resonate next to one another. Here too, Richter stacks registers of green and yellow atop the red field, exploring color relationships, but also how simple abstractions are at the core of all painting.
