In the 1960s, Sylvia Spicuzza made several watercolor abstractions with biomorphic qualities like the one presented here. While being a playful abstraction, the watercolor also seeps into the paper resembling contemporaneous abstract expressionist works by such artists as Helen Frankenthaler. This example almost leans into figuration and takes on some of the features of her Matisse-influenced drawing of bathers on a beach (10886g).
