This painting is one of the series of cubist cityscapes that the Peruvian artist Ernesto Gutierrez was experimenting with in the early part of his career. The entire composition is constructed of a lattice of crystalline planes of color. This composition, instead of focusing on the geometric lattices of local architecture alone, places two figures in the immediate foreground. The two women carry sacks of produce to market, shifting along as the buildings themselves seem to change through time.
