This painting, 'Mall Bird,' presents a black bird in an urban landscape using the humor and irony common to Robert Richter's oeuvre. The bird stands in the foreground atop the regularly patterned corbels of an urban sidewalk. In the distance, beyond a parking lot is a strip mall so common to contemporary life. Richter's rendition of the bird is ambiguous: perhaps it is a pigeon, which thrive in urban settings. At the same time, it could be any number of dark-feathered birds native to the artist's home in Wisconsin. This juxtaposition of nature with banal urban and suburban architecture is just the tongue-in-cheek subject that makes Richter's paintings so endearing an surprising.
