This sculpture presents a character common to Madamombe's work: a woman with a round face and wearing a billowing, layered dress. In this example, the woman leans forward presenting her young child, bringing Madamombe's larger themes of motherhood, womanhood and matrilineage to the forefront. This sculpture is particularly rare as it is one of the few, if not the only, examples where she presents a male child rather than a daughter. As is so desired of her work, this sculpture is also a play in surface and texture: her face, hands and child are polished and smooth, which is juxtaposed with the rough-hewn surfaces of her clothing and hair. Colleen declared, “I am inspired by the activity of women and I work hard to show this in my sculpture. I have used natural areas of the stone with rough workings to emphasize this movement – the texture follows the rhythms of the body. This contrasts with the highly polished areas of the face and hands.”
