This small portrait of gallerist David Barnett is an intimate example of the watercolors of Estherly Allen. She was a student of George McNeil, an important Abstract Expressionist, and his influence is visible in Allen's handing of the watercolor medium. In the image, the gestural swaths of color add a sense of spontaneity to the portrait, capturing the saturation of light during the height of the summer day.
